Glasgow School of Business and Society

Your education and future career are at the heart of our business. This University seeks to create positive differences in organisations and the environments in which they operate. This School brings together a range of subject areas to reinforce our mission as a University for the Common Good. It is only through exploring the impact of business on society that we can build teaching, learning and research that equips our students to excel in their studies and gain valuable employment to make a better world for all.

GCU is part of the United Nations Global Compact; the largest voluntary corporate responsibility initiative in the world. It brings together like-minded organisations to ensure that business, as a primary driver of globalisation, can help guide markets, commerce, technology and finance to advance in ways that work for the overall benefit of economies and societies.

This membership builds on our effort to embed the Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME) across the University. This is at the foundation of this School and how we approach business and its relationship to society. The aim is to ensure that our students are better equipped to manage such complex challenges through contemporary learning, innovative content and an international perspective.

At an international level we were the first university in Scotland to join the prestigious EPAS global network. This European management development accreditation scheme provides GSBS students with an assurance that their qualification is among the best in the world. This reflects our determination to engage internationally though GCU campuses worldwide and with study and education overseas. We also have an enviable reputation for Graduate Business Start-Up through our U-Hatch incubator, our scholarship initiatives and our growing and influential alumni and visiting faculty. However, understanding the global environment starts in our own community and you will be encouraged to participate in local projects such as the Work Ready Action Programme (WRAP) and Business in the Community initiatives.

British School of Fashion

Our first steps in fashion date back to 1875 and to our founding colleges in Glasgow, Scotland. In that era our primary aim was to provide women with opportunities in design, textiles and retail, with a keen awareness of the economic, social and environmental needs of the time. British fashion has evolved to encompass so much more than just manufacturing and the education provided by the GCU British School of Fashion reflects those changes. For decades, GCU has contributed to the business of fashion through the creation of pioneering courses. We were the first UK Institution to offer an MSc in International Fashion Marketing in 2000, and are still one of only a few Universities worldwide to offer a dedicated MBA in Luxury Brand Management. The British School of Fashion intends to build upon the foundation provided by our strong heritage and fashion industry expertise through continued innovation of new programmes and investment and development of our academic faculty.

Our specialised fashion knowledge is generated through a unique and critical balance of leading edge industry practice and underpinned by the latest academic research. The British School of Fashion has a thriving community of researchers who support research across fashion business and collaborate with researchers in different academic areas at GCU’s Glasgow and London campuses. Highly aligned with the GCU mission of ‘for the common good’, our research is encompasses sustainability and is underpinned by the theme of ‘societal innovations’.

We work closely with colleagues at the Fair Fashion Center at our New York campus to ensure everything we do is informed by the latest sustainable fashion research. Based at Glasgow Caledonian New York College, the Fair Fashion Center is proving the business case for sustainability by turning global issues into industry opportunities. By embedding this in to our teaching, consultancy and research, our students and industry partners become responsible leaders who can turn sustainable practice in to profit.

Our staff are experts in their fields. Most have worked in the fashion and luxury industry and all regularly collaborate with businesses to ensure course content is relevant, future-proof and engaging. By studying at the British School of Fashion, you will have access to their industry led knowledge and contact with their professional networks through a series of guest lectures and field trips.
